When children conquer the skies on their own
If you need to send your child on a journey alone, as a parent you will naturally be worried. And it can also be nerve-wracking for young passengers to be separated from the people they trust.
This is why Lufthansa places particular importance on caring attentively for the 70,000 or so children who travel alone every year, throughout their trip. At the airport, during the flight, and after landing, the child will always have an experienced and friendly member of staff at their side.
This Lufthansa special service can be booked on request for children aged 5 to 17 years. If your child is between 5 and 11 years old, they may only travel alone provided they use the support service or are accompanied by a person who is at least 12 years old.
The special service cannot be booked online and may only be booked via the Lufthansa Service Center or a travel agency. There you’ll be given all the necessary information and your young passengers will also be given a small yellow Lufthansa shoulder bag. This is used to store all important travel documents such as a flight ticket, passport, and care form and also serves as an identifying feature. The bag should therefore be worn so that it is visible throughout the journey.
On the day of departure, travel to the airport in good time and head to the Lufthansa check-in desk. In Frankfurt and Munich there is even a specially designed Lufthansa Family check-in area. You can deposit your baggage here and register your child plus his or her Lufthansa shoulder bag and carry-on baggage (which the little passenger should carry themselves) with the special service team. From that point on, your child is in the best possible hands and will be cared for until they are handed over to the person picking them up at the destination.
In some airports you can even accompany your child to the gate. In Frankfurt and Munich, there are some wonderfully equipped childcare rooms available for unaccompanied minors. Thanks to the coloring tables, children’s cinemas, and play areas, the time before boarding a flight will fly by!
During the flight, young passengers will be well-cared-for by the flight attendants, and they can ask them questions or go to them with problems at any time. They’ll get something to play with while on board, and they might even get a glimpse into the cockpit and get to know the pilot.
If your child needs to transfer flights, they will, of course, be accompanied by a member of staff. Upon arrival at the destination airport, the child will be handed over to the person named in writing as the person responsible for picking up your child. This person must be at least 18 years old and be able to prove their identity.
From check-in to collection, your child will be cared for attentively, ensuring that they never feel alone, and allowing them to fully enjoy the adventure of flying.
A helpful checklist for what you need to think about can be found here, from making the booking to your child being collected.
Please note that the rules for unaccompanied minors are not the same across all airlines. Please find out about the conditions each airline imposes in good time before your departure date.
If you have any questions, please get in touch with the Lufthansa Service Center. At every airport that Lufthansa flies from, the Lufthansa Airport Ticket Team is also at your disposal for ticket purchases, changes to flight bookings, or any questions you may have.
